In Class Letter of Reflection Draft:
Letter of Reflection
During this semester I have progressed in the pursuit to achieve my desired goal, which is to graduate and continue on my journey to become an Elementary School teacher. Taking the courses that I did during this fall semester helped me improve my skills in areas such as English and Mathematics. The skills I obtained this semester will benefit me in the future in my field of Child Education.
This course consisted of five learning objectives, which were writing a strong well-developed thesis, properly analyze, summarize critical reading texts, evaluate texts to form an argument, document a variety of sources in MLA style, and lastly the use of strategies for composing and revising essays. Throughout the semester the course focused on the element of critical thinking. Critical Thinking is a valuable skill because it allows the individual to create his or her unique arguments regarding a topic. This course taught me to not “ take what you get” but to really analyze a certain idea and develop my opinion. Each assignment was tied in to the material we were covering in class and the learning objectives. Along with the time in class discussing a particular topic there were class discussions, which allowed us to introduce our own ideas and arguments through an online discussion. These discussions were beneficial in broadening my perspective on the chosen topic and also allowed me to derive from my classmates opinions to build my own. In addition to the discussions, our group project on Frankenstein was one of my favorite experiences in this course. The purpose of this assignment was to research the literary background of several gothic novels and how they contributed to the creation of Frankenstein. I enjoyed this project because we were assigned to work in groups to create a visual to display our findings on the gothic novels. Not only was this project informational and aided in the understanding of Frankenstein but also I enjoyed working with my peers. The course required for one research essay in which we were to choose a topic relating to the advancements in science and technology and the ethics behind these advancements. I chose the topic of the death penalty and decided to take the stance against it. I struggled most with bringing the elements from my research and incorporating them into my essay. Another issue that I encountered was supporting my thesis throughout my essay. I received helped on these problematic areas by visiting my professors and also tutors in the writing center. I received valuable tips from both my professor and the tutors, which helped me grow in my writing. Although I have not perfected these problematic areas I find it less difficult to from a strong thesis that relates to my topic and is developed enough to be supported. This course has made me a better writing and also has taught me the importance of critical thinking and how important it is in our everyday life. Despite the progression this course has impacted in my writing, there still remains some issues those of which will be further assessed in future courses. I learned many valuable skills by taking this course and will recommend future students to take it as well.
